Gotta run.
Walking the dog is certainly good exercise for us human types. But your pooch needs a good run to keep fit and healthy ... particularly if he doesn't have a decent sized backyard to race around in.
So you're not a marathon runner? No dramas. When you're out walking, just let your buddy off the leash at a safe dog park ... and let him go. That'll often do it. However, if you need to encourage your dog to run, just dig out the old frisbee, or bring one of those tennis ball throwers along.
Of course, good health aside, the added bonus is that the walk home will be a lot more relaxed. With all that energy burnt up, your dog will be less likely to strain at the leash.

Home alone.
You can't be with your best mate all the time ... most of us have to work. The problem is, a dog left to its own devices can add up to trouble. When they get bored, you end up with chewed furniture, holes in the garden or your neighbours may have to put up with excessive barking.
A little stimulation is what they need, which isn't too hard. To create a fun environment at home, invest in a few toys. A decent dog chew toy can keep dogs busy for hours.
Also, look for Busy Bone products, in stores now. These entertaining and challenging chews with rewarding middles will keep your dog blissfully busy!

Hide-a-toys are increasingly popular, too. These are interactive dog games where several smaller toys are stuffed into a larger toy, and your pooch has to figure out how to get them out. You can also make your own versions by stuffing small toys or balls into a cloth bag.
Doggie playmates are brilliant idea, too. If you have a friend with a dog, why not have them over for a daytime play date. They'll enjoy the company. Don't have any doggie friends? Sign up to Doggie Wonderland and look for a potential play pal in your neighbourhood.

Older dogs.
Just because a dog is getting on in years, doesn't mean he should be leading a sedentary lifestyle. Quite the opposite, in fact. Regular exercise will help your dog lead a healthier, more enjoyable life. It can also help ward off old-age problems like arthritis and obesity.
Playtime is important for your dog's state of mind, too. The stimulation will keep him sharp and alert.
Diet is an important factor for older dogs. Once he reaches seven years, you should consider a senior formula. This will assist with maintaining a healthy weight and provide the proper nutrition.
